Add hammers to Petzl Nomic ice tools by machining both the
Nomic Astro picks and Quark Hammers for a 1/2-lap fit fastened
by the rear bolt. The full thickness of the Hammer blade extends
a short distance within the Nomic Head for support, and the
Hammer seat is contoured to fit the rear profile of the Nomic
Head.
Petzl adopted this design for succeeding product years.
Both ABAQUS Standard and Explicit FEA were employed to calculate
the acceptable lie-back torque a climber may safely apply
to this adapted hammer. Analysis validation was performed
using strain-gage instrumentation, and the steel qualities
were established via Instron tensile testing.
