Description
Add hammers to Petzl Nomic ice tools by machining both the Nomic Astro picks and Quark Hammers for a 1/2-lap fit fastened by the rear bolt. The 4mm blade of the Hammer extends a small distance within the Nomic Head for support, and the Hammer seat is moderately contoured to fit the rear profile of the Nomic Head.  Petzl has adopted this approach for their fall 2010 products.

The modified Hammer adds 40g, albeit in a destabilizing position furthest from the pick point. Removing the Nomic pick weights eliminates 60g mass to compensate.  The addition makes no discernable change in swing action.

Both ABAQUS Standard and Explicit FEA were employed to calculate the acceptable lie-back torque a climber may safely apply to this adapted hammer. Analysis validation was performed using strain-gage instrumentation, and the steel qualities were established via Instron tensile testing.
